Mississippi Brilla Knocks Off Baton Rouge Capitals 1-0 to Remain Undefeated and Win Southeast Division Title
 |
July 24, 2010 – Jackson, MS
The Baton Rouge Capitals came into Harper Davis Field without a realistic chance of wrestling the Southeast Division Regular Season title away from Mississippi Brilla, needing to beat them by an eleven-goal margin. Both teams knew that was unlikely, but both had motivation to play hard. Brilla wanted to end the regular season undefeated, and the Capitals wanted to prevent that very event.
Both teams had great chances to score in the opening half, but neither was able to do so. After the interval, each began making changes to the lineups, and Brilla was the clear beneficiary when substitute Nathaniel Foster turned a Phillip Buffington through-ball into the first goal of the match.
After a lightning bolt hit a little too close for comfort in the 70th minute, the referee suspended the match. The delay lasted approximately 30 minutes before the teams warmed back up, and resumed play.
The final twenty minutes were marked by Brilla holding possession for long periods with the Capitals making the regular counterattack. Only one good chance developed for Baton Rouge when Ben Callon’s shot from a loose ball was parried away by Brilla ‘keeper Andy Goellner.
While Nathaniel Foster earned Man of the Match honors for his match-winning goal, Goellner earned serious consideration for the honor. While he was only credited with three saves, all three were crucial as he saved a sure goal from Callon, and two 1 vs 1 chances that he smothered from the Capitals attackers.
Both teams will now turn their attention to Southern Conference Championships, which begin Friday, July 30 at Harper Davis Field at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. Baton Rouge will play the Laredo Heat at 5:00, and Brilla will play a team that has yet to be determined from the Mid-South Division at 7:30. The winners of the semi-final matches will advance to play Sunday, August 1 at 7:00 at the same venue.
