July 15, 2010 – Jackson, MS
Mississippi Brilla FC moved one step closer to the playoffs on Thursday night after knocking off Ft. Lauderdale Schulz Acadmy 4-0.
It was a match that Brilla controlled from the very beginning. Mississippi held possession for long periods of time trying to figure out a way to unlock the Ft. Lauderdale defense that tried putting all eleven players behind the ball at all times. Schulz Academy’s commitment to defense was such when they won the ball, they would often only send one player on the attack.
In the 14th minute, Ahmad Ihmeidan started the scoring for Brilla when David Lilly’s pass found him behind the last defender and he slotted it home. Ft. Lauderdale was able to keep Brilla from increasing the lead through halftime.
After the interval, Nick Rich doubled the lead when his dipping free-kick from 25 yards beat Ft. Lauderdale’s ‘keeper, Felipe Londono in the 63rd minute.
Brilla was able to find two more goals. First from Moses Aduny through David Lilly’s second assist of the night, and second, when Phillip Buffington tapped home an assist from fellow substitute Nathaniel Foster.
The win moves Mississippi three points closer to securing a second straight postseason berth for Brilla while officially eliminating the New Orleans Jesters from contention. New Orleans will try to exact some measure of revenge when Brilla visits them Saturday night for their third meeting of the season.
Now only three teams remain in the playoff hunt as Baton Rouge and Central Florida join Mississippi in the fight for the two spots. Mississippi will host both teams next week. The meeting could only be useful for determining seeding though if Brilla can win in New Orleans. Another three points for Mississippi will officially secure a playoff spot.
