Mississippi Brilla FC ended their season on a positive note by knocking off the last place Houston Leones on Saturday night 6-2.
Brilla looked in control from the opening whistle, and never let the Leones have more than a sniff at goal until well into the second half. Mississippi went up early in the 4th minute when Phillip Buffington collected an Ousmane Coulibaly pass and outpaced the Houston defense before smacking it past Houston’s goalkeeper Zachary Wallace. Buffington’s goal was his team leading eighth of season.
Brilla scored again the 14th minute when Tripp Harkins took a pass from Jacob Lawrence and knocked it by Wallace again.
Harkins added his second goal of the evening 23 minutes later from an Onesimus Ikungo assist. That would be all Brilla would need, but it certainly would not be all they would get.
Ousmane Coulibaly closed the first half by scoring in the 40th minute with a well-placed direct free kick.
Brilla did not come out with the same intensity after the break, and could not find their scoring touch again until Dwyane Demmin flicked a Jacob Lawrence header into the Houston net in the 68th minute to make it 5-0.
Houston got one back in the 71st minute when Luis Bernal collected a misplay in the Mississippi penalty area and knocked it into the empty Brilla net.
Brilla paid it back in the 76th minute when substitute Paul Babba knocked in a pinpoint cross from Phillip Buffington.
Houston added one more consolation goal in the 90th minute when Bernal got his second with a breakaway and well-placed shot into the corner of the Brilla net.
Brilla finished the season 7-6-3 while Houston dropped to 3-11-2. Both teams will look to improve in order to push for playoffs spot next season in what is arguably the strongest conference in the Premier Development League.
