Mississippi Brilla FC visited the New Orleans Shell Shockers on Wednesday night for their third meeting in two weeks. The teams tied on June 11 and Brilla squeaked out a 2-1 win on June 21. The third meeting would see Brilla win again by a 2-1 margin.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams trading and wasting chances to score, Brilla opened the scoring in the 51st minute when a New Orleans defender directed a Tripp Harkins cross past his own goalkeeper and into the Shell Shocker net for an own goal.
Brilla would continue to threaten throughout the second half and would eventually go up by two goals in the 75th minute when Charles Hines headed in Jacob Lawrence’s long throw.
New Orleans would find a late consolation goal in the 90th minute when Brandon Chagnard finally beat his defender and knocked one past Brilla ’keeper Scott Rosman, who was otherwise unbeatable all night long.
The win marks Brilla’s first road win in five tries this season. It gives Mississippi a 5-4-2 record and 17 points, which puts them in fourth place in the Mid-South Division. The Austin Aztex lead the division with 22 points and the Laredo Heat and El Paso Patriots are tied for second place 18 points each. The top two teams in the division will qualify for the playoffs.
The team will try to gain more points on the road when they travel to Houston and Austin on July 5-6 to take on the Leones and the Aztex, respectively.
